Ron Moraca General It's great to see a photo of Big Blue in action, Chuck. Superb photo, cool, cool location!!!!!! 3/6/2010 12:38:23 AM
Bernie Feltman General Wonderful photo, Charles. To the right of the semaphore is a silver pole topped by blue. I wonder if this represents what we called on the Seaboard Coast Line a "doll arm"? 3/8/2010 12:44:34 PM
Chuck Edwards General Yes that's what they are called. The doll arm is indicating a track {the one with the reefer} between the signal and the track for that signal. 3/10/2010 5:48:50 AM
Tom Beckett General You can't see it very well, because the reefer is mostly blocking it, but there's a hot box detector signal below the maintainer's platform. There was a detector around MP 260 on track 2. If a train had a hit, it would set the signal to stop, and the hotbox signal would light up "hot box". The train then had to call the Hornell dispatcher, who would check the read out tape to see what axle hit. The crew would have to check, I think, 20 axles either side of the one that had the hit. There was a similar detector at MP 230 on track 1 near Campville. 6/28/2011 5:00:12 PM
Tom Beckett General All of that said, cool shot. Waverly was always one of my favorite places in those days. Not whole lot of action, but what you saw was usually pretty interesting. The semaphores on that segment lasted into the early 90's when the line was single tracked west of Waverly, and made for great photos. 6/28/2011 5:02:45 PM
